Leave the blinds open
Have newspapers picked up
Make sure the grass is cut, or snow shoveled
Have the lights on timers
Arrange to have a neighbour's car left in the driveway

Always travel with doors locked, even when parked
Don't stop at rest stops after hours (truck stops should be okay)

Mountain directories are a must if traveling in the mountains

CELL PHONE
Be sure to have a cell phone, or CB, for emergency use
Analog phones generally have better area coverage
"Phone-in-a-bag" has more signal power to travel a greater distance
Check with your carrier about double long distance charges and roaming fees
EMERGENCY ROAD SERVICE
Do not travel without it
Make sure it includes contents insurance
BREAKDOWN PROCEDURES
Display a sign or a white flag
Honk the horn 3 times, repeatedly, and turn on the flashing lights to attract attention to the fact that you need help
Stay in your vehicle, keep the doors locked and the windows slightly open
Only leave the vehicle to talk to Police, not strangers
